A. Ross Alkire, Jr., age 89 of Mt. Sterling, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at his residence. He was born July 20, 1920 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the son of the late Abraham Ross Alkire, Sr. and Genevra (Sellman) Alkire.
Mr. Alkire was a graduate of Ohio University; member of Delta Tau Delta (Beta Chapter); retired Major of the US Marine Corps serving during World War II and having been awarded the Silver Star; a retired Banker; lifetime member of The United Church; Masonic Lodge #269 F & AM in Mt. Sterling; Sterling Chapter #74 O.E.S.; The Grand Chapter of
Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Hillsboro Chapter #40; Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus; National Sojourners, Inc., Columbus Chapter #10; and American Legion Post #417 of Mt. Sterling.
He was preceded in death by wife, Arlyne “Nicki” Alkire.
He is survived by daughter, Linda (Greg) Ritland of Minneapolis, MN.; son, Timothy Scott Alkire of Mt. Sterling; 3 grandchildren, Jason (Casey) Alkire, Nicole (Kyle) Kustermann, and Katharine Ritland; 6 great grandchildren, Jacob, Caden, Avery, Hadley, Gavin, and Faith.
A Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the PORTER-TIDD FUNERAL HOME, Mt. Sterling. Rev. Steve Brown officiating with the burial following in Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Friday, January 22, 2010 from 3 – 7 p.m.
Family suggest memorial contributions may be given to The United Church P.O.Box 223 Mt. Sterling, OH. 43143.
