Alice Virginia Walker Lower, 90, of Bucyrus, Ohio, died March 3, 2016, as a resident of the Inn at Orchard Park Assisted Living. Alice was the loving wife of the late Gene Lower for 64 years and the mother of Mindy [Mark] Mahler of Colorado Springs, CO, Becky Jill [Leonard] Hord of Bucyrus, and Jenny [Bob] Spencer of Vernon, VT. Alice loved her four granddaughters, Krista Mahler, Kate Mahler, Erica Spencer [Corey] White, and Emily Spencer. She is survived by her sister, Olive Robertson of Walla Walla, WA. Her brother, Bill Walker passed away last year. Alice was born on June 27, 1925 in Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Park, WY, to Clyde and Edith Walker. She moved to Ohio to work as a Registered Nurse, met and married Gene, and they eventually made a home in Hilliard, OH. Gene was Plant Superintendent for Borden Dairy Company in Columbus and Alice enjoyed her role supporting his career and starting their family. She returned to a nursing career in Hilliard and enjoyed many lasting friendships thru Borden, the nursing home, the United Methodist Church and as a Camp Fire Girl leader for Becky. She was an avid rose gardener growing over 50 rose bushes in Hilliard. It was her favorite flower and she shared the blooms with many lucky friends. A lover of birds and wildlife art, she passes on her love of nature’s beauty to her family. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed the classics. She loved trips to visit her family and many friends, she kept in touch with newsy letters, and she enjoyed their travel trailer adventures to Alaska, and Canada, and collected photos of all 50 State Capitols. In retirement, they also traveled to Hawaii, Europe and the Caribbean. Travels to Hilton Head to meet up with best friends and in-laws, Joe and Rose Mary Lower, and Marianna and Bud Lewis were also highlights of later years. Always a cheerful, sunny person, she made friends wherever she went. She will be missed by her Orchard Park fellow residents and the caring staff. A Spring Memorial service will be scheduled at the Bucyrus First Church of the Nazarene. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice at homecarematters.com or P.O. Box 327 Galion, OH 44833. She will be laid to rest with her husband in a small family cemetery in Vernon, VT overlooking the hills and Connecticut River.
