Angelo J. Campanella, 89, of Hilliard, OH passed away at home on Sunday, March 24, 2019. He was born in 1929, at Wilkes Barre, PA, to the late Joseph and Eleanor Campanella, and grew up in the Wilkes Barre area. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth Campanella of Plains, PA, his son, Michael and wife, Alica Campanella, granddaughter Michaela Campanella of Columbus, grandson Adam Morton and wife, Sarah, great granddaughter Adeline, great grandson Ezra, of Columbus, granddaughter Patty Stackeni and husband Nick, of New Orleans, LA; son David and wife, Shari Kinder, of Kansas City, MO; and special friend, Sue Ranck, of Columbus. In addition to his parents, Angelo was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Helen, and his sister, Anita Campanella, of Plains, PA.
Angelo attended Wilkes College, and received a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Masters of Science from Penn State, and Ph.D. in Physics and Electrical Engineering from Penn State, with theses in acoustics and ultrasonics.
After college, Angelo worked on missile guidance for HRB Singer Company at State College, PA, Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Falmouth, MA. Angelo married Helen in 1957, and in 1962, their family relocated to Columbus, OH, where Angelo worked at Industrial Nucleonics on IR (infrared) sensing of paper thickness. Angelo developed the first autopilot unit for private airplanes at Flight Systems Inc. (FSI), which then was bought by King Air, so Angelo was out of a job and decided to become a consultant.
Dr. Campanella was an acoustical engineer and consultant for 40 years, providing expert consulting and testing services to architects, designers, developers, engineers, government, industry, utilities, medical, education institutions and testing laboratories throughout the US. He was a member of ASA, ASTM, NCAC, INCE, and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. Angelo was a Registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) committee E-33.
Angelo was Vice Chairperson of the Institute of Noise Control Engineers, Subcommittee 33.01 on Absorption, and Vice Chairperson Subcommittee 33.06 on International Standards, an American representative to the Canadian Acoustical Association, instrumental for the international adoption of standards in acoustics.
Dr. Campanella founded ACCULAB in 1972, devoted to expert designing and testing services in the fields of applied physics, architectural acoustics, community noise, occupational noise and vibration measurements. These activities normally expanded into mechanical equipment noise reduction design and applications, HVAC noise quieting, residential and commercial building partition noise insulation design and field testing, television studio, radio studio and church acoustical design, computer modeling of transportation and HVAC noise, seismic and stress analysis of nuclear power plant fans and critical mechanical systems. He testified as an expert witness on the amount and effects on personnel of occupational noise and the effects of community noise on residences. In 1986, the name of the firm was changed to Campanella Associates.
In 1996, Angelo was the recipient of the ASTM Committee E 33 1996 Award of Appreciation for Outstanding Service. Angelo was a member of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants, delegate to ISO/TC43/SC1 on sound power measurements and noise, US Expert on Reference Sound Sources, delegate to ISO/TC43/SC2 on Building Acoustics, and US expert on Impact Noise Isolation in buildings. His work impacted noise control, acoustical privacy, comfort, speech intelligibility in meeting rooms, noise control in buildings, vibration control in buildings and analysis of community noise from transportation and aircraft operations as they affect building architectural design. Dr. Campanella presented and published numerous technical papers in acoustics.
Angelo enjoyed flying his Mooney 201, with commercial and flight instructor ratings. He was an avid radio amateur, call signal W8EDR. He was involved in Italian clubs in the area, and especially loved the opera where he served as a supernumerary on occasion. Angelo grew tomatoes and dandelions, and shared them all.
