Charles Vernon Strohl, 90, of Hilliard, Ohio, joined family in heaven April 16, 2025. Charles who was known by family and friends as Chuck, Jack, and Charlie, was born August 15,1934 in Van Wert, Ohio to Harold and Leona (Light) Strohl, who preceded him in death.
Married in May of 1954 to Lois Yvonne (Freel) Swincher (Dublin, Ohio) and later married in March, 1979 to Nancy Taylor (deceased February 2016).
Survivors include children: Sheryll Strohl Hammett (Rick) of Boston, Massachusetts, Richard Strohl of Dublin, Ohio, and Michele Barregarye (Robert) of Hilliard, Ohio; stepchildren: Craig Taylor of Long Island, New York, Taylor Stevens of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Melissa Taylor of Marysville, Ohio; and grandchildren: Jason, Alessandra, Daniel, Jonathan, and Lauren.
Charles started in the newspaper business in 1945 selling newspapers in Lima, Ohio and upon high school graduation started in the mailroom of the Lima News eventually becoming a Journeyman Mailer. In 1958, he moved to Columbus, Ohio and worked for the Columbus Dispatch mailroom processing newspapers and advertising supplements for delivery. In 1990 he moved to the Dispatch production facility and ran the tray system that managed inventory to delivery trucks. During his tenure at the Dispatch, he also served as the Treasurer for the local Typographical Union. Charles retired from the Dispatch in December of 1997.
While working for the newspapers, Charles also served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1952 to December, 1959. While never self-promoting, he took a great deal of pride in watching his son and grandson join the Navy, and appreciated the efforts this past year of Care 360 Hospice in recognizing and celebrating his time of service.
In his personal life, Charles was a quiet man, loyal to family and friends. Following in his father-in-law’s footsteps, he joined the Masonic Temple as a Master Mason in March of 1966, and in 1975 was admitted as a Prince of the Royal Secret 32 degree under the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. In addition to the Masonic Temple, Charles had many interests. Incredibly sharp with numbers he loved to play cards, especially euchre and poker, and prepared tax filings for family, friends, and co-workers. Interested in firearms, he provided valuations for estate sales and personally participated in muzzleloading events. He even dabbled in winemaking enjoying the opportunity to experiment with different flavors.
With his family, he loved taking all the neighborhood kids to Friday night high school football games, attending band competitions and theatre events, spoiling his dogs that were by his side often in his life, watching Buckeye football with at-home tailgating, and simply enjoyed sitting in his backyard sharing the shade and his flowers with his kids and grandchildren, often making a game of identifying birds that found their way to his sanctuary. To his family, these special moments with him will be missed, but his love of nature will live on in each of us.
