Clarence Maxwell

d. May 16, 2022

Clarence ("Max") L. Maxwell, MD, age 89 of Plain City (Upper Arlington), Ohio. Passed away at home on May 16, 2022 after a brief illness. He was born on December 3, 1932 to Ernest and Monaleta (Latham) Maxwell in Columbus, Ohio.

He grew up under the protection and informative care of his parents, and grandparents, in London and Hilliard, Ohio.

Max graduated from North High School in Columbus in June, 1950. He attended The Ohio State University and received his medical degree in 1958. While at Ohio State, on January 28, 1953 he met a lovely girl, Ruth Brown, from Cleveland, Ohio. They married June 25, 1955.  They enjoyed nearly 67 years of marriage. Four children were born to their marriage; Lisa (James) Callahan, Lynne Quinn, Laura (Victor) Jochem and James (Kathy) Maxwell. Eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren followed.

He was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau social fraternity and Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity. He served on several local and regional medical societies, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He was a member of Northwest United Methodist Church.

He graduated from The Ohio State University Medical School in June 1958. He was an intern at University Hospital, served a general surgery residency at White Cross Riverside Hospital and completed his plastic surgery residency at St. Louis University in Missouri.

He returned to Columbus in 1964 and opened his medical office at Riverside Methodist Hospital. At that time he was the third Plastic Surgeon in Columbus. He practiced until August 1986.

After retiring from his medical practice he co-founded Ricwel and Mace Corporation in Dublin and served as Medical Director for three years. He also joined his son-in-law and opened and ran the Callahan Family Golf Center in Hilliard for ten years.

In 1987 he and Ruth contracted with David Bonnie to build their dream home, Darby Oaks, on the west bank of Big Darby Creek. They enjoyed living there, surrounded by the beauty of nature, for 32 years.

Max loved the out of doors. During high school he achieved the Boy Scouts of America's Eagle Scout rank. He was a natural athlete and excelled at every sport he pursued. His favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, golf and skiing. He was an avid reader and loved to study history.

He and Ruth traveled to all fifty United States, throughout the British Isles and many countries in Europe. He especially liked Nagagami Lake in Northern Ontario, Canada and spent a week there each summer for 30 years. It was his joy to have members of his family, and many friends, join him for a week at the lake.

Max was a wonderful and devoted husband, father and teacher. He loved to depart truisms such as "Waste not, want not", "Nature hates stupid", "Nothing good happens after midnight", "Early to bed, early to rise", and he preached "Time Management", so you would never run late. He passed on his love of nature and history to his children. Starting at an early age he taught them how to fish, golf, horseback ride, ski, grow a vegetable garden and play Euchre and Chess. He loved spending time with his children in a woods, on a farm or on a beach. He took his family on many trips throughout Ohio, and the United States, to visit natural and historic sites. He was a staunch supporter of education and reading. He loved family gatherings. He had a great appreciation for beautiful music of any genre. Max and Ruth had season tickets to the Columbus Symphony for 36 years.

Max supported us all throughout the many accomplishments and difficulties of our lives. His spirited energy, humor, wisdom and guidance will be greatly missed.

All expressions of sympathy, including flowers, honorary donations to a favorite charity, and cards are welcome. Two of Max's favorite charities are the Motts Military Museum and the National Parks Foundation.
