Dan R. Miles, age 90, of Dublin, Ohio, died at home on July 4, 2021. Dan was born in 1931 to Elza and Marion Miles. Dan was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia and his brother, Robert Miles. Dan is survived by; his eldest brother; Delmer Miles, daughter Kathy (Tim) Massie; sons, Stephen Miles and Nathan (Barb) Miles, grandchildren; Michael (Kelly)Massie, Patricia (Mike) Pittenger, Shannon (Drew)Maurer, Nick (Melissa) Massie, Thomas (Jana)Miles and Ann Miles. He is survived by six great grandchildren; Ellie Massie, Emersyn, Theodore and Everly Pittenger, Parker and Kennedy Maurer and many nieces and nephews and good friend Marjorie Conrad. Dan was a graduate of West High School- class of January 1949.He was a member of Champion football teams of 1947 and 1948. His father played for the 1919 team and elder brother, Bob, played for the 1945 Champions. Other than working for the family theater chain, his first job was as Franklin County Sheriff from 1952 to 1954. He was one of the first to enter the Ohio Penitentiary in the Halloween Night Riot in 1952. It was quite an experience and started a 44-year career in law enforcement. From 1954 to 1956 he was in the U.S. Army. The first six months he served in Augusta, Georgia at Camp Gordon. (This is the same place his great grandfather, Noah Miles, was discharged from after the Civil War.) The next year and a half he served in Salzburg, Austria where his wife joined him in living off post. His daughter, Kathy, was born there. After returning to the United States after the Austrian Occupation was over, he joined the Columbus Police. The next 30 years went by so fast that he could have written many books about his 25 years as a detective. After his retirement he spent twelve years as a county prosecutor’s investigator. Dan was devoted to delving into the family’s genealogy, telling detailed stories of his life as a detective to anyone he met, telling stories about his childhood to his adult children, feeding generations of raccoon families in their back yard, reading, bird watching in his backyard, and keeping his yard full of beautiful flowers. Private family services will be held at Sunset Cemetery.
