Dean Porter, "Coach" age 80, died peacefully after battling cancer on January 19, 2015 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Dean grew up and remained a resident of the Mt. Sterling area. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He was awarded the Midwest All American title two times at Miami and lettered three years there in football as a fullback.
He married the love of his life, Joyce Solt Porter in 1957. Dean left college and began playing in the Canadian Football League for the Ottawa Roughriders. After moving back to Ohio, he played semi-pro for the Columbus Colts. He began his teaching career as a health teacher with The Plains High School and then began teaching industrial arts, which he taught until he retired. He coached football for The Plains Blue Devils and then subsequently for Madison Plains for almost 30 years.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Marcella Porter of Mt. Sterling, older brother, Bud of Texas and sister, Janet Porter of London, and son Fred Porter.
Dean is survived by his loving wife, Joyce and children, Tammy Williams (Rick) of Circleville, Teri Griffith (Jeff) of Mt. Sterling and Tim Porter (Lisa) of Chillicothe. He has 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dean requested that there be a time of "mingling" prior to his memorial service. Mingling will start at 11 am on Saturday, January 24, 2015 with the memorial service commencing at 2 pm at the PORTER-TIDD FUNERAL HOME, Mt. Sterling.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Madison Plains High School Athletic Department Football Team, c/o Matt Mason, 800 Linson Road, London, Ohio, 43140.
