Douglas R. Alter, age 62, of Columbus, Ohio, earned his heavenly reward after a seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer on 4 June. Doug was born to the late Jack Alter and Estelle Alter in Columbus. He graduated from Eastmoor High School in 1974 and The Ohio State University in 1981. In 2011 he graduated from Ohio Dominican with a Master’s in Business Administration. Doug always expressed his pleasure for the many friends he made during his OD adventure. In 1994, Doug started working at Huntington Bank as a collection manager. Over the years at Huntington, Doug touched the lives of many fellow colleagues. Some of them he hired, some he trained, some he mentored and some he worked with on special projects. Doug led many of the building specific fundraisers, like United Way, Meals on Wheels and the mentoring program at West Broad Elementary. According to his peers at Huntington, he was always passionate about his work and was one of the most pleasurable people to be around.
Upon his retirement from Huntington in 2015, Doug was recommended for an intermittent job at the Department of Public Safety. Doug quickly got the backlog of work under control all the while making his coworkers laugh with his witty quips. Doug worked there until 2018.
Doug played men’s softball for the better part of 25 years, mostly at Berliner. He earned the nickname “Doc” or the “Doctor” for his precision pitching on the many teams he played for. He played the game he loved along with many friends he made throughout the years. After his playing days were over, he turned his skills into umpiring games. He has kept in touch with many of the friends he had met on the ball diamond through-out the years. In addition, after his children were born, Doug was very much engaged in their sports teams and coached softball and football.
Doug was a member of Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church in Columbus where he served as a Deacon finishing up this year.
He is survived by his wife Natalie, daughter Kylee, a Junior at The Ohio State University, son Joe, a recent high school graduate, mother Estelle Alter, and sister Debbie (Jeff) LeMaster.
