Dr. John Brenneman Gardiner, D.O., of Apple Valley, Howard, Ohio was born February 10, 1925, Columbus, Ohio. John was the son of John Kelly (J.K.) and Eva Ceil Brenneman, 1581 Neil Ave., Columbus, Ohio. John passed away suddenly Saturday, September 14, 2013 at The OSU Medical Center. Dr. Gardiner graduated from North High School, 1943; attended The Ohio State University and University of West Virginia (Pre-Med and ROTC) until drafted and he served in the United States Army in France during WWII. John graduated with a B.S. from The Ohio State University in 1946. He took a part-time job as a lab technician in the new Doctors Hospital. He decided to become an Osteopathic Physician, graduating from the Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1955. He interned at Doctors Hospital 1955-56. John opened an office of General Practice in Clintonville, where he practiced for 41 years until 1996. John was a firm believer in the benefits of Osteopathic Manipulation and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Osteopathy. He was head of the Manipulation Department at Doctors Hospital for several years. John was a member of: The Cranial Academy; The Vienna Medical Society; The Ohio State Medical Association; American Osteopathic Association; Ohio Osteopathic Association; and the Columbus Academy of Osteopathic Medicine.
John was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church currently belonging to Amity United Methodist Church, Amity, Ohio. John sang for 30 years in the choir at Northwest United Methodist Church, Columbus for years and he enjoyed singing in the choir at Amity United Methodist Church.
John also participated in the Masonic Lodge #563; Scottish Rite; Valley of Columbus; the Aladdin Shrine; and the Reception Unit. John excelled in the sports of water skiing, handball and tennis. In his younger days John water- skied and played handball at the YMCA/Columbus winning several tournaments. Then with the move to Apple Valley he helped form the Apple Valley Tennis Club. John last played tennis in August and complained that he couldn’t finish the game because he was too short of breath.
John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Olive Louise Barb; Children: Daughter, Martha Lou McGlone and daughters: Sara (Chris) Bowsher and son Isaac; Michelle (Josh) Warthman and daughters Alexia and Kalie; Son, John Brenneman Gardiner, Jr. and sons: John Brenneman(Amy) Gardiner III and daughter Rylie; Jason Conrad (Candace) Gardiner and children: Mariea and Chase; Daughter, Susan Sexton and children: Sasha and Sean ; Sister-in-law Patti (Barb)(Dan) Miles and Niece, Kathy (Tim) Massie; Nephews: Nathan (Barb) Miles; Steve Miles and numerous great and great- great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to: Amity United Methodist Church, 16649 Wooster Rd., Amity, Ohio, 43050; Shriners Hospital for Children, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45229 or the Ohio Sled Hockey, 4464 Wrens Nest, New Albany, Ohio 43054..
Family will receive friends Friday, September 20, 2013 10:00 a.m. till Noon at Amity United Methodist Church, 16649 Wooster Rd. Amity, Ohio 43050; where funeral service will follow at 12 pm. Additional visitation will be held Friday, September 20, 2013 5-7 pm at TIDD FUNERAL HOME WITH CREMATORY, 5625 Norwich St., Hilliard, Ohio, 43026. Private burial will be at a later date in the Nessly Chapel Cemetery, New Cumberland, West Virginia.
