Earl Liff, 86, passed away May 13, 2011. He was born February 8, 1925, in Era, OH, to parents Fanny (Hicks) and Wilson Liff. He graduated from Darby School in 1943 and immediately entered the U.S. Navy. Earl served in the American, European, Asiatic, and Pacific theatres. He served on the U.S. Pan Gulf and later aboard the KA 108 USS Washburn. He married Martha Downs during leave on December 7, 1944, and returned home in January, 1946.
Earl was active in farming, owned the Derby Lumber Company, and was a real estate appraiser and developer. He retired in 2010. Earl belonged to several associations including the Columbus Board of Realtors, the American Association of Appraisers, and the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. He was a 60 year member of the American Legion Post #417 of Mt. Sterling, a 65 year member of Masonic Lodge #269 F & AM of Mt. Sterling, Scottish Rite, Shrine, and a lifelong member of Derby United Methodist Church.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leonard and Freddie, sisters Betty Lou (Lambert) and Marianne (Karn), grandson Brian Liff, and his wife of 62 years, Martha J. Liff (5-15-07).
He is survived by son Gary (Lyn) Liff of Williamsport, OH and daughter, Margene (Neil) Moore of Ft. Wayne, IN; six grandchildren including, Christy (Eric) Murray, Greg Liff, Kendra (Jason) Kay, Katie Liff, Zach (Lindsey) Moore, Graham (Kayla) Moore, and one great-granddaughter (Ryleigh Liff). He is also survived by long time friend and brother-in-law, Jack Rogers.
A Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the PORTER-TIDD FUNERAL HOME, Mt. Sterling. Rev. Leland Brehmn officiating with the interment following in Pleasant Cemetery where the Circleville Amvets Post #2296 will perform a military service for the World War II Navy veteran.
Visitation will be Monday from 5 – 8 p.m., closing with a Masonic service at 8:00 p.m.
