Elizabeth "Betty" Canterbury

Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Canterbury, age 85, of Hilliard, Ohio died at home on June 13, 2023. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on December 9, 1937 to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Grandiminico) Winko. She is also preceded in death by her sister JoAnn, brother Joseph, husband Jim and daughter Monica. She is survived by her daughter Marcia Canterbury, sons James (Lora Beth) Canterbury and Matthew (Karen) Canterbury and grandson Matthew Canterbury. After high school she worked at McDonald’s offices where she met her husband, Jim. There were married for sixty years. Once her four children were in school, she started working at J.W. Reason elementary school as a librarian. She retired from Hilliard City Schools in 1999. She was an excellent seamstress. She made many of our school clothes, including a suit for her husband. She took a cake decorating class. Every year for our birthday she made a special cake and meal of your choice. Picking blackberries behind our home was a summer time occurrence. She would can blackberry jam, make blackberry cobbler and eat blackberries on ice cream. Her autistic grandson Matthew was the light of her life. She prayed constantly that he would talk. He never has. When she met Jesus, I’m sure she had a conversation about those prayers. Although dementia robbed her of the last several years of her life and the stroke took the last seven months, she was never a burden to care for. She loved our Lord Jesus. She was a good and faithful servant. She will be missed. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 10:30am in the Adoration Chapel at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church, 4475 Dublin Rd., Hilliard, OH 43026 with Father Frank Brown, Celebrant. Burial services will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 High Street, Lewis Center, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the autismsociety.org.
