Ellen Marie Van Houten, age 58, of Columbus, OH, died peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Villa Angela Care Center in Columbus, OH. Preceded in death by her father Andrew W. Van Houten and her brother Steven A. Van Houten. Survived by her mother Ruth Carol (Reed) Van Houten of Columbus, OH; brother Andrew W. Van Houten of New York, NY; and longtime partner Finn Quinn of Columbus, OH. Ellen was born on June 6, 1959 in Springfield, OH and was a member of the class of 1977 at Reynoldsburg High School. Being diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of nine did not stop her from excelling in athletics, including track and softball. She was a woman of high spirits and good humor who loved nature, gardening and her many pets, including her cat Barney and her German shepherd Cody. She was always an optimist even though complications from her diabetes, beginning in her late teens, seriously affected her health. In 2005, she went into a diabetic coma for two months. After her hospitalization, she entered Villa Angela Care Center where she was a resident for the final years of her life. Ellen made a significant recovery from her coma which came as no surprise to those who knew her. She lived with a positive and cheerful attitude for another twelve years. Faith and spirituality were very important to Ellen. At Villa Angela, she regularly attended church services and Bible study. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of Villa Angela Care Center and the many medical professionals that helped her over the years. Friends may call on FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at the TIDD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 5265 Norwich St. in Hilliard, OH (614)-876-1722. Private burial will be held at Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
