Reverend Monsignor William J. Maroon died on Friday, January 30, 2009.

The son of Abraham and Rose (Farrah) Maroon, Monsignor Maroon was born on October 1, 1929 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. His natural mother passed away at his birth. He was also preceded in death by his father and the only mother he ever knew, his step-mother, Rose (Hatem) Maroon and sister Gemma. He is survived by his brothers, Father Donald, Joseph, brother-in-law Ted Kessel, niece Theresa (Kessel) Lyons, and long-time friend, Joe Karam. He proudly served in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in France before entering the priesthood.

Monsignor Maroon attended elementary and high school in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Monsignor studied at St. Charles Borromeo College, Columbus, where he received a B.A. in Philosophy in 1963. He studied theology at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in Norwood, Ohio, from which he graduated in 1967. Monsignor was ordained to the priesthood with his brother, Father Donald Maroon for the Diocese of Columbus on May 27, 1967 at St. Joseph Cathedral by Bishop Edward G. Hettinger. In 1992, he was named a Monsignor, when the Holy Father John Paul II bestowed upon him the title of Prelate of Honor.

His assignments included Assistant Pastor, St. Joseph Cathedral, Columbus (1967), Instructor of Religion, St. Joseph Academy (1967), and Director of Religion, Bishop Ready High School (1970). He was named administrator pro-tem then Pastor at Immaculate Conception, Kenton (1973). He was pastor of St. Brendan the Navigator, Hilliard (1978 and again in 1993), and St. Mary, Portsmouth (1982). Monsignor also served on the Personnel Board (1976), as administrator of the Portsmouth Office of Catholic Social Services (1982), and the College of Consultors (1983). Monsignor retired in 2001, but served as administrator pro-tem of Seton Parish, Pickerington, (2002-03) and the Perry County Consortium of Parishes, (2005). He served as Spiritual Advisor to the sisters at Ohio Dominican. He was also a Veteran of the United States Army.

Monsignor Maroon’s body will be received at 1:30pm Monday, February 2 with calling hours from 2pm-8pm at St. Brendan the Navigator Church, 4475 Dublin Rd., Hilliard.There will also be calling hours Tuesday, February 3, from 2pm to 8pm, and Wednesday, February 4, from 9:30am until the Funeral Mass, which will be celebrated at 11am. Bishop Frederick F. Campbell will preside in choir, Bishop James A. Griffin will be the principal celebrant and Monsignor John Dreese will offer the homily. A mercy meal will immediately follow. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, New Straitsville of Perry County, OH will follow later that day. Priests intending to concelebrate the funeral Mass are asked to bring an alb and white stole. In lieu of flowers, Friends may wish to contribute to St.Brendan's Parish or a Scholarship Fund in memory of Msgr. Wm. J. Maroon at St. Charles Preparatory School 2010 E. Broad St. Columbus, OH 43209.

Priests are asked to offer Mass for Monsignor Maroon in accordance with the Pactum Marianum.
