Garry Vogelpohl

d. October 16, 2007

Garry Geren Vogelpohl was born in Continental, Ohio to Enos and Bessie Vogelpohl. He died at Doctors’ West Hospital on Tuesday, October 16. Garry began his college education at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. His education was interrupted by his service in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He held the rank of Master Sgt. and served as a Loadmaster, operating out of New York City to Europe and to North Africa. He graduated from Ohio State University after the war and also earned his M.A. in education there. He then taught American History and Social Studies in the Millersburg and West Geauga school systems until his retirement in 1979. Soon after retirement, he and his wife, Joan, moved to Columbus where they resided until his death.

Garry was a servant, sharing his life with his church, volunteering as an elementary school tutor, and spoiling three granddaughters, Rachel Elizabeth, Rebekah Lynn, and Nancy Pearce. He enjoyed music, gardening, fishing, reading, train-watching, and air shows. Most of all, he enjoyed playing cards with friends and family and was an exceptional Bridge player. He and his wife of 60 years shared great love for their three children, Garry Allen, Nancy Ann, and John Lindsey. For many years, Garry was a man of few words, so when he spoke at any length, folks listened. His dry humor, quiet laugh, and famous “smirk” made the day for his family. Family time was always a high value for all five of them. Although he did not wear his faith on his sleeve, his values were quite clear: hard work, frugality, independent thinking, honesty, sharing, and respect for others.

Garry is survived by his wife, Margaret Joan who cared for him so lovingly in recent years; his son and daughter-in-law, Garry Allen and Ruth Ann Vogelpohl of Elizabeth City, NC; his daughter Nancy Ann Roth of Columbus, OH; his son and daughter-in-law, John Lindsey and Donna Lee Vogelpohl of Galloway, OH; a sister, Jackie Hornbrook of Angola, IN; three granddaughters - Rachel Meyen (Michael), Rebekah Perry (Forrest), and Nancy Pearce Vogelpohl; and a great-grandson, Samuel Allen Meyen. He is missed greatly by his family, but they give thanks for the gift of his life among us.

There will be a Memorial Service to remember and give thanks for his life on Saturday, November 24, 2007, 11:00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasedena Ave., Columbus, OH 43228.
