Gertrude B. Himes, age 99, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at Mayfair Nursing Center in Columbus. She was preceded in death by her parents Warren and Mary (Stough) Himes, her brother Ellsworth Himes and her sister Consolo Partee. She is survived by a niece, Mary (Wallace) Richardson of Columbus and twin nephews Harley (Margaret) Himes of Kidron, Ohio and Harold (Hazel) of Wooster, Ohio in addition to numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews and a very loving extended family. Gertrude was born and raised in Williams County, Ohio and entered the Navy in 1944. After basic training, she was stationed at the military hospitals at Parris Island, South Carolina and Dublin, Georgia. She was honorably discharged in 1947 and finished her nursing degree at Rush Memorial Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. In 1951 she did post graduate work at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and in 1952 she came to The Ohio State University Hospital as the first head nurse of the newly inaugurated Eye, Ear and Nose Unit. Later she worked for a cardiologist at Riverside Hospital. She retired in 1976 from the Admitting Department of Grant Hospital in Columbus. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, October 30 at 2 PM at the Amlin United Methodist Church, located at Cosgray and Rings Road in Dublin, Ohio. A private burial service will be held at Fountain Grove Cemetery in Bryan, Ohio. Donations in Gertrude’s memory may be made to Odyssey Hospice, 540 Officenter Place, Suite 100, Gahanna, Ohio 43230.
