Glen D. McDowell

Glen D. McDowell died January 31, 2024 in Columbus, OH.  He was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1948 to Henry and Lee McDowell.  He graduated from Upper Moreland High School in 1966 and headed to Clemson University.  There he met his wife Carol, and they married in 1968.  While attending school, he played for the Clemson Rugby Club and worked for the University as a surveyor as they expanded the campus.  Glen was a great storyteller, and loved to tell about the time he ran down the Hill “in front of 18 screaming fans” for the only rugby game in Death Valley.  

Glen graduated from Clemson with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1970.  Shortly after, Glen and Carol moved to Virginia Beach, where they raised a family.  He worked for the U.S. Navy for over 30 years, traveling all over the world.  He was actively involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers for several years, and served as the Virginia Chapter president for a year.  He worked at Clark Nexsen and Jacobs Engineering after retiring from civil service.   

Glen loved Clemson football.  He was a proud founding member of the Tidewater Clemson Alumni Club.  He attended football games frequently, including the 1981 Orange Bowl.  Glen loved golf, and played as often as he could.  He enjoyed his local courses, and was even lucky enough to play St. Andrews and Pebble Beach.  Glen moved to Hilliard, OH in 2019 to be closer to his children and grandchildren.  

Glen was preceded in death by his wife Carol, in 2018.  He is also preceded in death by both his parents, his brother Henry, sister Diane, and sister-in-law Sandra.  He is survived by his daughter Linda Beckman (s. Morgan) and their children Xander and Harry, and his son Jason McDowell (s. Jennifer) and their children Ian and Alyssa.  He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Donna Paist (s. Scott), Larry McDowell, Greg McDowell (s. Patty), Jimmy McDowell (s. Linda), Paul McDowell (s. Gail) and Randy McDowell (s. Sherry), and numerous nieces and nephews.  

Family will receive friends from 4:00p.m.-6:00p.m. on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2024 at the TIDD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 5265 Norwich Street, Hilliard, OH 43026 (614)-876-1722.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any charitable donations be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association or your favorite charity.
