Harold B. Greenwald, age 87, of Hilliard, passed away March 30, 2011. He was born March 3, 1924 in Cleveland to Bernard and Beata (Peters) Greenwald. He graduated from Kent State University in 1949 and The Ohio State University in 1954. He taught music in the schools of Wyandot County and Tiffin, Ohio and retired from Tiffin Public Schools in 1984 after 37 years in education. He served during WWII with the 17th Airborne Division, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and the Operation Varsity assault over the Rhine River. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Verna Dean Greenwald; son Daniel (Janet), Iowa City, daughters Jane Greenwald (Robert Kowalski), Dublin and Alice (Lee) Zimmerman, Hilliard; grandchildren Renee (Ben) Walker, Jeff Greenwald, Sam and Philip Kowalski, and Marc Zimmerman; sister Elsie (Wayne) Steingass, Parma Heights and brother Edmund (Janet) Greenwald, Cincinnati. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Irene Snider. He was a member of Hilliard Senior Center, the American Legion and St. James Lutheran Church. A memorial service will be held 2 PM Saturday, April 9, 2011 at St. James Lutheran Church, 5660 Trabue Rd., Columbus, OH 43228, where family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the time of service.
