Harry Richard “Dick” McDermitt, age 90 was born to Elmer and Opal (Greer) McDermitt on August 28, 1933, in Columbus, Ohio. Dick passed away peacefully Sunday, October 15, 2023.
Dick is survived by his long-time companion, Georgina Hobbs, her sons Cliff (Mary) Hobbs, Ronnie Hobbs, and daughter Bonnie (John) Hanna. Also survived by sister, Ruth McDermitt Hegele and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by wife Sharon, daughter Kristin, brothers E. E. McDermitt, W. G. McDermitt and J. R. Lang.
After graduating from Columbus West High School in 1951, he attended Capital University. Dick enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. serving for 4 years, upon his honorable discharge he returned to Columbus.
He joined his father Elmer in the building industry where he was trained as a carpenter. In the mid 1950’s E. McDermitt and Sons was formed. This family-owned business later evolved into Capital City Excavating. The company employed many over the years conducting business throughout Ohio. Dick remained a partner in the business until his retirement from the company. He continued to work in construction/remodeling for many years, always known as a hard-working man of integrity.
Dick was a founding member of Hickory Hills Country Club, a 65-year Mason, member of American Legion Post #614, the Drummers Club, and a long-time member of the Franklin County Fair Board.
An athletic man who played football in high school and college, Dick continued to be active in motorcycle racing competition in his younger years. He liked outdoor activities including golfing, gardening, and hunting.
He enjoyed baking delicious cakes and cookies - we shall miss them! Dick was always present for family events, special occasions and reunions. Kristin knew him to be a devoted father. Always a loyal companion and friend, he will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched.

Family will receive friends 5-8 pm on THURSDAY, October 19, 2023, at the TIDD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 5265 Norwich Street, Hilliard, Ohio, 43026, where friends may call 1 hour prior to the Funeral Service which will be held at 11 am on FRIDAY, October 20, 2023. Funeral service to be conducted by Pastor Michael Purdon. Interment to follow at Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Hilliard, Ohio. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Starliner Diner, 4121 Main Street, Hilliard, OH at 5 pm on October 29, 2023.
