Jack Waddell Shinn, passed quietly with family at his side at Danbury Senior Living, in Columbus, Ohio on January 10, 2018.
He came from very humble beginnings in Selma, Alabama during the Great Depression. His mother brought the family to Columbus when Jack was six. He graduated from Central High School where he was on the football team. We won a scholarship to Columbus College of Art and Design.
His art career was interrupted when he joined the US Army Air Force during WWII. Not long after enlisting he met a young Anna Mae Carlson at a USO dance in Pittsburgh. They were married before he was stationed in the Philippines where he piloted B-24 heavy bombers in combat over the South Pacific.
After the war they settled down to raising a family in Columbus. Jack turned his art talent to the growing field of commercial advertising; eventually starting his own commercial art studio, Columbus Art Inc. At it’s high point he had twenty-five employees. Later he transitioned to the role of marketing director for non-profit fundraising.
Finally, upon retirement he returned to art for art’s sake and painted many fine art portraits.
All through his life he worked hard, accomplished much and helped make the world a better place. Even in his last years, he had very positive attitude and a wonderful sense of humor; always grateful to those who helped him through the day.
Jack had 73 years of happy marriage to Anna. Had 3 children - Eric Shinn, Crystal Pipic and Joi Hill. He also had seven grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held for family and close friends in the future.
