Joan Velma VanSchoyck

Joan VanSchoyck, age 83, of Hilliard, passed away Wednesday January 31, 2007 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Preceded in death by husband John R. VanSchoyck, and parents Joe and Estella Matthews. Survived by loving son Michael J. VanSchoyck, sister Norma Crays, cousin Thelma Allemang, nieces Linda Orendorff, Sandy Frazier, Carol Strong, Joyce Hileman, nephews Tim Crays, Todd Crays and Robert Ross. Born in Columbus on July 19, 1923. Joan graduated from Hilliard High School in 1941. In 1946 she married John R. VanSchoyck of Hilliard, OH. Her son Michael was born in 1951. Following her husbands death she began employment at Riverside Methodist Hospital. In 1993 she was the April Employee of the Month and was runner up for the Employee of the Year for 1993. Following her retirement in 1993, Joan became active in various activities. A life long member of The Hilliard United Methodist Church, she participated in various church activities. A charter member of the Northwest Franklin County Historical Society, she served on their board of directors for 12 years. As a 12 year member of the Post 614 Legion Auxiliary, she was awarded the Helen Geese Certificate of Appreciation in 2005 and 2006. These awards were for her outstanding volunteer services. In 2003, she was elected to the Hilliard Senior Citizen Hall of Fame joining her mother Estella Matthews the 1st inductee. Joan will be remembered as a loving mother and loyal friend. She gave unselfishly of her time for friends and activities. Her integrity was beyond reproach. The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayer, cards, and other expressions of love and support during this difficult time, especially Dr. Paul Dusseau and Dr. Peter Kourlas, the staff at Mill Run Garden and Care Center, Home Reach Hospice and Riverside Methodist Hospital. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 pm Friday at the TIDD FUNERAL HOME, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard. Funeral service will be held 10 am Saturday at the Hilliard United Methodist Church, 5445 Scioto Darby Rd., Hilliard, OH, with Pastor Jim Riggs officiating. Interment Wesley Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary, 4180 Avery Rd., Hilliard, OH 43026.
