John Anderson Jr.

d. April 22, 2017

John Anderson, Jr., age 87, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 22, 2017 after a short period in hospice care in Sebring, Florida. John was born on May 27, 1929 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania to the late John G. and Jennie (Wenzel) Anderson. He attended Morgantown High School in Morgantown, West Virginia. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II. On June 3, 1950, he married Margaret “Peg” Campbell. He graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor’s Degree in business, and was a lifelong Mountaineer fan and supporter. His career in marketing with Columbia Gas System distribution subsidiaries took him and the family to Staunton, VA, Charleston, WV, and finally Columbus, OH. He retired in the early 1980s after 30 years. He and Peg then opened and operated Amen Corner, a Christian bookstore in Grandview Heights for 11 years.
John always loved family visits and gatherings, enjoyed good conversation and meeting new people. It was true that he never met a stranger.
His passion was for the outdoors: hunting, fishing, and especially golfing! He was a longtime member of Hickory Hills Golf Club in Columbus. He also owned a farm in Vinton County, OH for a while and built a cozy hunting cabin there. Fulfilling a teenage dream, he became the proud owner of a 1931 Model A Ford. Showing it off at car shows and even receiving some trophies was another fun pastime. While living and working in Charleston, he became a licensed Amateur (“Ham”) Radio Operator, call letters WA8UNP, and maintained his license for the rest of his life. He was also a member of the American Legion.
He moved to Sebring, FL in 2014, and married his second wife Kay in December, 2015. They were very active members of Bethany Baptist Church in Avon Park and he enjoyed golfing with his friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Peg in 2014 after more than 63 happy years together. Survivors include: second wife Katherine “Kay” Anderson-Sebring, FL; brother, Walter L. Anderson (Rose), Golden, CO; sons, Rodney W. Anderson (Mary)-Dublin, OH, James A. Anderson (Ruth)-Columbus, OH, Jon D. Anderson-Gaithersburg, MD; step-daughter, Sherri Martin-Mullica Hill, NJ; grandchildren, Catherine O. Anderson, Major Brian E. Anderson, USAF (Gena), Phillip J. Anderson, USN, Frances E. Norona (Ivanhoe), Brooks J. Anderson; step-grandson, Jonas Hutchins; and great-grandsons, Zaccaria Anderson, Jackson Anderson and Ethan Anderson; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Tidd Family Funeral Home, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard, OH 43026 on Tuesday, May 2 from 2 -4 pm and 6-8 pm, and on Wednesday, May 3 from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. with his Pastor Chuck Pausley officiating. Interment with military honors to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware, Ohio.
