John E. Bryner

Hilliard

John Bryner, age 83, of Hilliard, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023. He was born on August 19, 1939, in Wooster, Ohio, to the late Thomas and Maude (Yarnell) Bryner.

John attended Wooster High School and graduated in 1957. He attended OSU on a Naval Reserve Officer Training Scholarship. He graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree in 1962 and commissioned as a Naval Officer – attaining the rank of Lieutenant with Secret Clearance. He spent 4 years in the Navy on an Aircraft Carrier in the Western Pacific and on a small Seaplane Tender in the Middle East.

John most recently had retired from The Franklin County Engineers office after 21 years of service. 

John joined the Church Choir before ever joining the Resurrection Lutheran Church, and sang in the choir until his passing. He and his wife, Nancy, became official members in 1967. He went on to serve on Church Council for 6 years. He served 2 years as President and 2 years as Treasurer of the Church. He later served 24 years as Treasurer of the Resurrection Lutheran Church Day Care Board. For many years he mowed the church lawn and helped with other yard work and maintenance of the buildings.

John joined the Hilliard Ohio Historical Society in 1983 and became a life member in 1986. He and Nancy both served as Docents at the Village for school tours, county fair and various other events at the Village. John has helped to give walking tours of the Old Hilliard area.

He also volunteered as a bus driver for many trips for the Seniors. He was involved with the Bread of Life Program at Church.

John served many years on the Hilliard City Council.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Bryner; children, Jeffrey (Amy) Bryner and Marcia Killilea (late husband Sean) ; grand-children, Gracie and John Bryner, and Brianna and Abby Killilea; his sister, Irene Rickett; sister in laws, Connie (Kenny) Huffman and Kay Eaton; and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family will receive family and friends at Tidd Funeral Home 5265 Norwich St.  Hilliard, OH on Monday, June 19th from 6-8 PM.  A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 20th at 11:00 AM at the Resurrection Lutheran Church, 3500 Main St. Hilliard, OH.
