John L. Miller

December 6, 1948 — July 26, 2024

Ripley, Ohio

John Miller, age 75, of Ripley, OH, formerly of Hilliard, passed on Friday July 26, 2024 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Helen, and his brother-in-law Roger Griffith. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 45 years, Louann, his fur babies, Buddy and Pepi, children Brett Martin, Lori Smith, and Lindsay Sands, brother Joe (Sheryl) Miller, brothers and sisters in law Penny Griffith, Mark (Kim) Spangler, Melanie Gagnon, Tom (Ronda) Spangler, Marta (Randy) Hill, and Cindy Weier, many, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and many dear friends along with special recognition to his two wonderful nurses, Melinda Montgomery from Adams County Homecare and Josette Warner from the VA Home Based Care Program.

John was born in Columbus, but moved to Hilliard at a young age, where he stayed through high school. He started working for Big Bear Stores in the mid 60’s where he became a meat manager, but prior to that, as a young boy he was a very enterprising salesman, making loop potholders and selling them to his neighbors. He drove an ice cream bike, would often hitch-hike to Scioto Country Club to caddy, and also sold the Columbus Dispatch. After Big Bear, he did several sales jobs and in the last years of his work life, he returned to meat cutting at Giant Eagle until his retirement.

John was a proud US Marine who served in the Vietnam War in 1969-70. He always wore his Marine shirts and hats with extreme pride. He was a life member of the VFW. John was a great lover of the outdoors. He was an avid softball player, playing until he was nearly 70. He also loved to hunt, played a lot of golf, and was in the Hilliard Horseshoe League for many years. In all of the sports he participated in he made many lifelong friends.
