Col Loren G. Gillespie USAFR (Ret) went to meet his maker on April 20, 2014. He was born July 31, 1929 in LaRue, OH to Charles E. Gillespie and Lena Topliff Gillespie who preceded him in death as well as his brothers Lewis and Charles. Graduated by LaRue High School in 1947 and the Ohio State University with a B.S. degree in Agronomy in 1951. He was an active member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and served as President during the winter and spring quarters of 1951. Col. Gillespie received his commission as a 2nd LT in the United States Air Force from the ROTC program at the University. He served in the active and reserve forces for 30 years and served in Korea during 1952 with the 49th Fighter Bomber Wing. Col Gillespie also served as the Commander, Ohio Wing Civil Air Patrol (an Air Force Auxiliary) from February 1983 to May 1987, during which time the Ohio Wing received several commendations of excellence. He was employed by the Agricultural Chemicals Group of W.R. Grace for 34 years, retiring in 1987. He served in various field and management capacities while working for Grace. In 1970, Loren worked very closely with Dr. Garth Volk, then Chairman of The Agronomy Department to establish the Linville Shoemaker Scholarship Fund for future Agronomy students at the university. Survived by loving wife of 63 years, Lee, daughters Pam (Craig) Cassell and Becky (John) Schlott, grandchildren Adam and Allie Cassell, Emily and Katie Sharrett, great grandson Oliver Custer and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association, 15120 Collections Center Dr., Chicago, IL 60693. Family will receive friends 5-7 pm Thursday at the TIDD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard, OH 43026; where funeral service will be held 11 am Friday. Interment LaRue Cemetery.
