Marjorie Calentine Clark, age 89, died Thursday, February 23, 2017. Born March 16, 1928. A long-time resident of Hilliard, Ohio - since 1952. A 1946 graduate of West High School. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from OSU. Her long and stellar career with the Columbus Public School System had humble beginnings when she started the first private pre-school and kindergarten in 1955 – Pixie Pre-School - in what was then the small village of Hilliards, in her home on the quaint country road - Rome-Hilliards Road. Her graduates of that long-ago beginning are now senior citizens and fondly remember themselves as Phi Beta Kinder graduates. She went on to hold many positions in the Columbus Public School System, which began as an Elementary School teacher. Her career progressed to positions of Reading Consultant, Assistant Principal of Windsor Elementary School, Principal of Wayne Avenue School and Lincoln Park School; and Principal and Supervisor of the Orthopedically Handicapped Program for the Columbus Public School System. Her career culminated in her last position as Principal of Colerain Elementary which specializes in the education and integration of orthopedically challenged students. In addition, she received many accolades for her innovative programs and techniques for the orthopedically challenged students, such as the eye typewriter. She was awarded many recognitions, most notably the Ingram Award (White Castle) and the Paul Harris Award (Columbus Rotary Club). She also shared her expertise, upon request, with the Cleveland Ohio Public School System. She was a frequently requested speaker and conference panel member for many educational venues. Upon retirement, she pursued her many interests, which was foremost, the theatre. She was a performer with the Grandparents Living Theatre (nka Senior Repertoire of Ohio Theatre), touring internationally with the company of I Was Young, Now I’m Wonderful production. Her last performance was in Cologne, Germany. She was a prolific writer of children’s stories and founded – in conjunction with another writer – the Central Ohio Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, for which she became the Assistant Regional Advisor. In 2006 she self-published a picture book, What Did Grandma See? In her retirement, she also used her education and career experiences to assist with the development of a religious program for the developmentally challenged at the Scioto Ridge United Methodist Church, which continues today. As an experienced seamstress and tailor, who made all of the clothes for herself and her family, she used those talents in her retirement years to make “hats for the homeless”, donating many warm, fleece hats, as well as baby blankets, to those in need. Her talents and creativity were many, her energy was endless, and her love for her family knew no boundaries. Marjorie was a long-time member of Scioto Ridge United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her former husband, John E. Clark, Sr, also of Hilliard, Ohio; and her parents, Robert and Hilda Calentine of Columbus. She is survived by her children: John E. Clark, Jr., Jill C. Lintelman (Robert), and Jan L. Douglass. Additionally, her grandchildren: Kinsey A. Douglass and Megan S. Douglass; her siblings: Marilyn J. Middleton (Dan) of Florida, and Gloria J. Hoover of Granville, Ohio, as well as many nieces and nephews. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
