Marvin E. Cress (97) passed away on Monday, August 5, 2024. Marvin was a wonderful husband, fabulous father, terrific grandfather and a great role model. Marvin was born in Montgomery County, OH on January 20, 1927 to Henry Ernest and Ruth (Weinner) Cress. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marlene; his parents; sisters, Janice Dice and Naomi Grothjan and brother, Morris Cress. Marvin is survived by his son, Douglas (Megin) Cress; and his granddaughter, Brooklyn Cress.
Marvin retired from Decker & Associates Construction company. He was a Master Finish Carpenter. Marvin worked on many buildings in downtown Columbus, the Brewery District and German Village. One place you can see his workmanship is the bar in Schmidt’s Sausage House that he helped rebuild after the fire in 1983. He used his skills to impact students after earning his Master’s degree in Education from The Ohio State University, teaching Industrial Arts in many school districts in Ohio. He was an active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Dublin, OH. He attended Men’s Bible Study and built many wood items for the church. He loved woodworking, building all kinds of projects; Picture frames, an inlaid box, a custom toy box for Brooklyn to name a few. A definite love of Marvins was spending time with granddaughter Brooklyn talking about horses and coloring together. He also enjoyed travel and spending time with his friends, the Peters, the Feins and the Millers.
Marvin loved traveling with Marlene, especially to see friends and family in Tulsa Oklahoma to visit the Oklahoma State Fair and watch horse and cattle shows. Marlene was the love of his life and he took care of her up until her death 5 months ago. After she passed Marvin missed her so much and longed to be with her again in Heaven. We know they are up there together walking around and talking about all they are seeing.
A special thanks goes out to Vitas Hospice and the staff at Carriage Court of Hilliard for your exceptional assistance for Marvin.
The family will receive friends at St. John’s Lutheran Church 6135 Rings Rd. in Dublin, OH on Saturday, August 24. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 AM and a memorial service following at 11:00 AM with Army Military Honors.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, to consider a donation in Marvin’s memory to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
