Mary Pauline (Motil) Heffley, nee Maria Paulina Motylova, 90, was born April 24, 1920, in Lipiany, Czechoslovakia, to John and Paulina (Sedlak) Motyl. God came to take Mary home on August 12, 2010, at the Mount Sterling Place where she resided for the last four and a half years.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, son, Robert Alan, two infant daughters, brothers, Steve, Joe, and John Motil, and sisters, Pauline Slaton and Anne Antle. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Don) Swonger of London; grandchildren, Angela Marie (John) Dickman of Plain City, Roberta Lynn Swonger of Plain City, and Jacqueline Ann ( George) Edmisten of Dublin ; great grandchildren, Abigail, Matthew, and Seth Dickman; brother, Andy Motil of Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
After her mother died when Mary was around two years old, her father came to America. In 1930, Mary, age ten and her brother, Steve, age 15, left from Germany on a steamship to come to America where their father had been for seven years. They arrived at Ellis Island in New York, where they stayed for two weeks because of a mix-up in their papers. Finally they traveled by train to around Byesville, Ohio, where they were met by their father and five new siblings.
After she was married, Mary moved from Columbus in the early 1940’s to Mount Sterling where she had resided ever since. She became a U.S. citizen in 1943. Mary was a wonderful, very loving, kind, and caring mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and gardening. Mary’s last name, Motylova, means butterfly in Slovak. She certainly lived up to the name. She was a quiet, gentle spirit who loved nothing more than to be outside flitting around her flower gardens.
Mary was employed for a time at the Ohio Willow Wood and the Orient State Institute, but spent most of her life in the 1960’s through the early 1990’s as a caregiver for numerous elderly people in the Mount Sterling, Lilly Chapel, and West Jefferson areas.
While Mary was never afforded the opportunity of a formal education, she was a very well educated, creative lady. She finished four years of school in Czechoslovakia and completed four years in America in only two years. Although she never received a diploma and was largely self taught, she loved reading and learning new things.
