At the age of 91, Mary "Midge" (Stephens) Shephard passed away on March 17th, 2025, leaving a legacy that will forever be cherished by her family and all who had the honor of knowing her. To those who knew and loved her, it is no surprise that she entered and left this earth on a holiday. Born a New Year baby and departing on St. Patrick's Day, she embraced the celebrations she loved to host. Whether it was a weekend evening spent entertaining friends or hosting Christmas Eve gatherings with family, her home was always filled with food, laughter, and warmth.
Born into a large and humble family with nine siblings, she learned from a young age the values of hard work and resilience. Growing up very poor and often hungry, she vowed in her adult life that no one would go hungry in her presence. She cooked amazing food like family favorites cube steak, salmon patties, coleslaw, black raspberry dumplings, and many other delicious dishes. Midge even worked in the cafeteria at Brown Elementary School making sure the children’s bellies were full at lunch time.
She shared an extraordinary 73-year marriage with her beloved husband, Bill. Married on May 28, 1952, they were approaching their 74th anniversary this May. Their journey together was a testament to the enduring strength of their love, navigating life's highs and lows with unwavering devotion.
Her greatest pride and joy were her children, to whom she was a strict but loving mother. They meant the world to her, and she dedicated her life to raising them with the same strength and determination that she exemplified. Her devotion didn't stop there; her grandchildren held an even more special place in her heart. They brought light to her days and smiles to her face, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
She extended her love and care to the many children she babysat over the years. These children became a part of her heart, some becoming a part of the family (Hutton family).
Midge’s biggest smiles were always found in the presence of a child or a laugh over the telephone when talking with one of her close friends or siblings.
Midge is survived by her husband Bill Shephard, three children; Billy R. Shephard (Stevie Jo), Terry M. Shephard, Lori (Scott) McCoy, Grandchildren; Richelle (Adam) Crum, Emily Shephard, Case McCoy, Londyn McCoy and Kaelyn McCoy, Godchildren; Tyler Hutton and Tonee Hutton, Great Grandchildren John T. Dabe, Makayla Dabe, Great-Great Grand Children; Jayden, Jaxon and Wrenleigh Dabe.
Midge is preceded in death by her father, Ralph Donald Stephens, mother Stella Rebecca Hallick, granddaughter Jillian Samantha Shephard, brothers; Donald Ray Stephens, Ralph Stephens, Gary Stephens, Frank Stephens, Ronald Stephens and Roger Stephens, sisters; Selva Singer, Betty Reed and Doris Sexton.
Her presence will be profoundly missed, but the memories of her love, wisdom, and strength will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in peace, knowing that her legacy lives on through the lives she so deeply impacted.
