Phillip L. Vermillion, Sr., age 65, of Galloway, Ohio passed away on August 26th, 2011 after a long and valiant battle with mesothelioma cancer. He was born November 8, 1945 in Kenton, Ohio, the son of Dorothy Wornstaff and the late C.P. Vermillion. He graduated from Ridgemont High School, Mt. Victory, in 1964. Fulfilling his lifelong dream, Phil joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol and graduated with the 80th academy class on June 28, 1968. Phil served the Patrol starting his career as a Trooper and was promoted through the ranks to Captain. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy at Quantico, Virginia in 1982. He retired after 28 years of dedicated service, where he received numerous awards including Post Trooper of the year in 1971 and 1973. He was later employed by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, where he served as a Security Threat Coordinator/Gang Investigator for thirteen plus years. During his tenure at Corrections, Phil served on the Executive Board for the National Major Gang Task Force. Phil was also a member of the following: the Aladdin Shrine, Masonic Lodge, and the Scottish Rite. He was also a veteran of the United States Army Reserve.
In addition to his mother, Phil is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Bonnie (Munz) Vermillion. He is also survived by his two children, Phillip, Jr. (Melissa) Vermillion of Hilliard and Melissa Vermillion of Galloway; his beautiful granddaughter, Hannah of Hilliard; his brother, Dick (Joyce) Wagner of Kenton; brother-in-law, Butch (Billie) Munz of Bellefontaine, and sister-in-law, Carola Munz of Russells Point and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Phil enjoyed fishing, watching his Ohio State Buckeyes as a season ticket holder in both basketball and football, playing cards, but what he loved most was spending time with his family.
Family will receive friends on August 30th, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the TIDD FUNERAL HOME 5265 Norwich St. Hilliard, OH 43026. Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. on the 30th. Funeral services will be held on August 31st at 11 a.m., also at the Tidd Funeral Home, to include memorial service honors by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. A Celebration of Phil’s life will be held immediately following the funeral services at Makoy Center, Hilliard, Ohio.
