Richard “Dick” F. Shumaker, 91, died Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Westminster Thurber Community. Formerly a resident of Hilliard, Ohio, Dick was the first born of John and Leona Shumaker of Grandview, Ohio. Dick is preceded in death by his sister, Betty Marilyn Woodrow (Brud) of Springfield, Ohio, his wife Marjorie Thomas Shumaker, and is survived by their children Greg (Cindy), Dean, and nephew, John Woodrow, and his wife Maria and her children Mark (deceased), Greg (Cinda), David, and Anthony (Karen), 10 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
Dick was born on March 31, 1922 in Columbus, Ohio and attended Grandview High School (class of 1941). He first attended Ohio State University, graduating from Florida Southern University after WWII. He was a Marine pilot with the first PBJ (B-25) Bomber Squadron VMB “Lucky”413 as part of the Pacific campaign receiving the Air Medal of Honor with Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross for Aerial Combat. Dick was a 33rd degree Mason, Kentucky Colonel, and member of the Columbus Menenchoire and First Community Church. He was appointed by Governor Rhodes as the first chairman of the Ohio State Fire Commission. He proudly represented the Sutphen Corporation (fire apparatus) for nearly 50 years managing territories in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia and Texas before retiring. Dick loved his family and country, and had a strong faith in God.
Visitation at TIDD FUNERAL HOME, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard, OH 43026 Sunday, November 24, 2013 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm with graveside service to be held at Wesley Chapel Cemetery, 3225 Dublin Rd., Hilliard, OH 43026 at 12:30 pm Monday, November 25, 2013. A memorial service will follow at Westminster Thurber Community at 2:00 pm. The family suggests donations to: Honor Flight, Inc., Attn: Diane Gresse, 300 E.
