Robert Charles Hess died peacefully at Crestview Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster, Ohio on Monday, May 21, 2018 at the age of 85. Robert is survived by his children, David (Pam) Hess, Jane (Bruce) Carpenter, Elizabeth (John) Cerabino-Hess and Julia (Joe Bonner) Hess; his grandchildren, Colin Hess, Evan (Courtney) Hess, Paige Carpenter, Tessa Carpenter, Quincy Cerabino-Hess, Flora Cerabino-Hess, Anastasija Bonner, Aleksejs Bonner, Lillian Bonner and Adela Bonner; his great-grandchildren, Aslyn Mounts, Kael Hess and Lincoln Hess; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Hess; his parents, Charles and Ann Hess of Cincinnati, Ohio; his brothers Howard Hess, Richard Hess, and Charles Hess; and his sisters Katherine Brady, Mary Helen Pratt, and Nancy Herbert. Robert was born on March 17, 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry. He served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957. Robert married Rachel in 1961. He owned and ran two businesses, a Hickory Farms franchise and Kelly’s Landing, a small seafood carryout, while raising his four children with his wife Rachel. He retired in 1985 and transitioned into a real estate business with his son. Robert was friendly, kind, and devoted to his family. He enjoyed fishing, yard work, following the stock market, and time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and neighbors. He was known as “the Mayor of Ellington Road” for his generosity with time and tools and a ready willingness to help his neighbors. He was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church in Upper Arlington, where he served as an usher for many years. Father Daniel Ochs will officiate. Private graveside service and interment will be held for the family at Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
