Stephen A. Schenz, 80, of Hilliard, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2025, in the comfort of his home, with the companionship of his beloved beagle, Freckles.
Steve was born on October 3, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Dr. John W. Schenz and June Schenz. He grew up in Hilliard, Ohio alongside his late brother, Jonn Schenz. He was a proud graduate of Hilliard High School class of 1962, where he was known as “Stever” by his classmates. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a medic until honorably discharged.
He spent many years as a medical industry representative, before taking over as caretaker for his parents. He then served as a volunteer for the Board of Elections, Hearts for Honduras, and the New Life Ministries Homeless Outreach. He was a member of the Meadow Park Church of God, where he worked in his final years.
Steve had a big heart, a kind soul, and loved his family dearly. He enjoyed visiting the zoo with his grandchildren and loved all animals, especially the great apes. He was particularly fond of the silverback gorilla, distinguished for their patriarchy in their troop.
He was known for always being glad to give a helping hand, which was displayed in his years of volunteer work for multiple organizations.
He is survived by his children: Scott A. Schenz (Aly) of Crestline OH, Kari E. Schenz of Bucyrus OH, and Brandon W. Schenz of Mason OH, stepchildren Stacy Beeler of Valparaiso IN, and Michael Dyer of West-Bradenton FL. He was a proud grandfather of grandchildren: Shawn Schenz, Vaughn Schenz, Simon Schenz, Lilia Suarez, Shiloh Schenz, Mikyla Suarez, Kai Suarez, and Jacob Schenz; as well as step-granddaughter Lindsey. He proudly displayed photos of his family all around his home and was referred to as “Big Papa” by his grandchildren. In addition to his family, Steve leaves behind countless friends whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his mother, June A. Schenz (Simmons), father Dr. John W. Schenz, brother Jonn Schenz, and his Uncle Carl Schenz, who was very special to him, as well as step-grandson Matthew A. Beeler.
