Thomas M. Barton
B. September 28, 1927 – D. December 16, 2015
Tom Barton passed into blessed eternal life late Wednesday, December 16. He was born September 28, 1927, to Harold Daniel and Mary Renfro (Crockett) Barton in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
Tom grew up in Indianapolis along with his four sisters: Elizabeth, Patty, Donna and Marilyn Kay. Tom’s parents and sisters Elizabeth and Patricia preceded him in death. He grew up loving the Indiana State Fair and the Indianapolis 500. He attended Shortridge High School in Indianapolis before enlisting in the United States Navy in September 1945.
Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1947, he began spending his summer hours at the Rivera Swim Club—where he met his wife of almost 66 years, Nancy Booth Stern. Tom and Nancy were married on August 4, 1948. Together they raised five children, first in Indianapolis and later in Cincinnati and West Chester (Ohio), where Tom found success working as a regional service rep with Ford Motor Company—until he decided to start his own auto repair business and later a heavy-equipment excavation business. He always enjoyed living in the country and doing a little farming and raising horses and cattle, on the side. His last working years were spent working for Butler County as Fleet Manager.
Tom and Nancy both retired in 1994 and sold their farm in Seven Mile (Tolbert Road) to their daughter, Christena. They sold nearly all their worldly belongings, bought an RV, and took off traveling the United States for most of a decade visiting the contiguous 48’s until on their last tour, they finally took the hard drive to Alaska and back.
Once they decided to settle down again, they made their new home in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains in Madisonville, Tennessee, where they lived once again the country. Tom and Nancy remained in Southeast Tennessee until 2013 when they moved back to Ohio to be near family in Dublin.
Nancy preceded Tom in death in 2014. Four of Tom’s children survive. His survivors include daughter Marianne with husband Alan McCall of Tallahassee, Florida, and children Tim Johnson, Rose Hagans, and Rob Johnson; daughter Kathleen with husband David Plesich of Hilliard, Ohio, and children Micah and Daniel Grambsch and Alexandra Silanskis; son Thomas Michael with wife Victoriana of El Paso, Texas, and children Stephanie and Christopher; daughter Nancy Jane with husband Eddie Hannah of Denver, Indiana, and children Eddie, Rebekah Hanson, Melanie Gerstorff and Clay; and daughter Christena’s children Sarah Helton (Steve), Danielle Stidham (Brandon) and Christopher Karle. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren. Tom will be warmly remembered by his children and friends as faithful husband, skilled mechanic, successful businessman, and devoted father and grandfather.
