Wendell V. (Bud) Metz, age 76, of Hilliard, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2009 at The Columbus Alzheimer’s Care Center. He was born in Parkersburg, WV, son of the late Elza Chester and Glenna O. Phillips Metz. Preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Metz; two brothers, Eugene F. and Donald E. Metz; and nephew, Jon McClelland Metz. He graduated from Parkersburg (WV) High School, and Muskingham College, New Concord, OH with a B.A. in Speech and Sociology. He also received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army, serving in the Medical Services at Fort Benning, GA. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Margaret L. (Peg) Metz; son, Michael Robert (Janet) Metz; daughter, Deborah A. Price; grandchildren, Brian Price, Bethany Price, Lynn (Carlos) Segovia, and Jon (Jeri) Metz; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Harold (Shirley) Metz; sister-in-law, Marion Metz; along with many nieces, nephews, loving relatives, and friends. He was very active in Scouting, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Much of Metz’ early career was with youth offenders. He worked as a parole officer and employment specialist for the Ohio Youth Commission in Cleveland, was a social worker and case worker supervisor at the Juvenile diagnostic Center, O.Y.C. in Columbus, and later was the Social Service Director for the Rosemont School for Girls. For four years Metz headed the O.Y.C. Bureau of Juvenile Placement, directing a state-wide program of aftercare for delinquent children. He was also O.Y.C. Interstate Compact Administrator for juveniles. Prior to going to the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections as Deputy Director of Program Services, Metz was Chief of the Bureau Project Review, Administration of Justice division, Ohio Department of Development, administering federal funds, making grants to counties and cities in the criminal justice field. Metz was also the Fiscal Officer, Department of Human Services and Fiscal Administration, Franklin County Commissioner’s Office. From 1987-1991, Metz served as Assistant Safety Director for the city of Columbus, Department of Public Safety. In addition to his 30 years of public service (city, county, and state), Metz was a part-time faculty instructor in Sociology at Mt. Carmel School for Nursing and Franklin University. Other involvements included being a member and chairperson of the Advisory Board for the Unruly Project, member of the Program Service Committee and Campaign Manager for the 1984 Franklin County Children’s Services Levy. He was a member of Northwest Bible Church. Among his hobbies were flying and marquetry. Upon his retirement, Columbus City Council designated April 30th, 1992, as WENDELL V. “BUD” METZ DAY. Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at THE TIDD FUNERAL HOME 5265 Norwich St. Hilliard, OH 43026 where a funeral service will be held at 1pm Monday with Pastor Dennis George officiating.
