William Edward Brogan passed away in his home in Hilliard, Ohio on April 2nd, 2024 at age 93. Known to friends and family as “Bill”, “Brogan”, and “Papa”, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, and most importantly: a devoted follower of Christ.
Bill was a builder, starting from a young age. Most would think of his many woodworking projects, but more than that, he was the builder of a well-lived life.
Bill was born December 6th, 1930 to Otis and Lucy Brogan, the fifth of nine children. His early years were spent in McDunn, West Virginia, a small mining camp at the head of a “holler”. They didn’t have much, but they “made their own fun” through creative games and building toys.
Bill accepted Christ and was baptized at 16 years old. He married his first love, Jean Ridenour, in 1949 amid military service in the air force. Bill entered the Air Force at 17 in 1948 serving in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Germany until an honorable discharge in 1949. Bill and Jean built their life in Hilliard, Ohio starting in 1952. Their children Joy Elizabeth and Brian “Ed” Edward were born during this time. Bill began work at Aller and Sharp Trucking (later PDX) where he managed trucking operations for 43 years.
In 1969, Jean suffered a debilitating stroke. Bill stayed steadfast by her side, even building custom rehabilitation equipment. Jean passed away in 1979. Bill married Phyllis Duncan in 1980, and they lived in Hilliard until 1995 and then moved to Charleston, West Virginia. Phyllis passed away in 2004. Bill was a faithful husband in two marriages of 30 and 24 years. In 2006, Bill returned to Hilliard where he could be near his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Bill was always serving others in any way he could through friendships, church, and organizations. He always shared his love of music and woodworking. His hand-built projects, clocks, and furniture fill the homes of family and friends.
Bill leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, steadfastness, faithfulness, discipline, and perseverance. Those he impacted will do their best to follow his example.
Bill is survived by daughter Joy (David) Waugh, daughter-in-law Hope Brogan, grandchildren Kelly (Peter) Olson, Michelle (Theo) Perry, Melody (JR) Young, Liam Brogan, and Bella Brogan,
great grandchildren Grant Olson, Adelyn Olson, Jordan Young, Darnell Young, Dalin Young, Sydney Young, and Lyric Perry. Bill was preceded in death by son Brian “Ed” (Hope) Brogan, parents Otis and Lucy Brogan, Wife Erma Jean Brogan, 2nd wife Phyllis Brogan, and siblings Nellie “Sis”, Louise, Virginia “Ginny”, Robert “Bob” Brogan, James “Jim” Brogan, Jack (Bea) Brogan, Fred Brogan, and Patrick (Florence) Brogan.
