William R. “Bill” Schnug, age 93, of Hilliard, passed away in hospice at National Church Residences at Mill Run in Hilliard on April 27, 2019. He had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. Bill was born in Columbus on November 9, 1925 and spent his early years on the West side. In jr. high his family moved to a farm on Scioto Darby Rd. near Hilliard where he graduated from Hilliards High School Class of 1942. Bill served in WWII in the pacific as a Navy signalman. After the war, he came back home, married his wife Patricia Williams and attended The Ohio State University, graduating in 1951 with an engineering degree. He worked for Ohio Power in Stuebenville as an agricultural engineer (Rural Electrification) from 1951-1957. Then he moved his family back to the home farm in Hilliard. Then worked at Ohio State in the Agricultural Engineering Dept., eventually becoming an Associate Professor. A major portion of his work at OSU was with the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service, working with farmers and 4-Hers across Ohio. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years Patricia (Williams) and his parents Hazel (Burgoon) and Wilhelm Schnug. He is survived by children Mary (Chuck) Buck, Bill (Pam) Schnug and Lesa Schnug, grandchildren Mandy (Jay) Rhoades, Emily (Ladd) Gabriel, Lauren (Ray) Wachauf and Brandon (Regan) Schnug, great grandchildren Riley, Keegan and Camden Wachauf, Chase Gabriel and Cole Schnug, sister Paula (Howard) Hamilton, brother Joe (Dot) Schnug, sisters-in-law Phyllis Willis (Sun City, West AZ) and Joanna Bartholomew (SC), numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Bill was a charter member in American Legion Post 614 in Hilliard and was very active in Legion activities in Americanism and veteran services. He served on the Board of Directors at Buckeye Boys State and is on the Boys State Hall of Fame. He is also in the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. He also received the Galbreath Award from the Hilliard Chamber of Commerce. Bill and Pat were inducted into the Hilliard Senior Citizen Hall of Fame in 2000 for their service in the community. Bill was a member of Hilliard VFW and the Hilliard Moose Lodge. He was a member and faithful supporter of Hilliard United Methodist Church. Bill was a true Renaissance man. He loved his family, his friends, his church, his community and his country. He was a music lover, everything from Tchaikovsky and Beethoven to the Big Bands and Frank Sinatra. He loved sports, especially baseball-in his later years he would watch “his” Reds or Indians for hours. At various stages in his life he played football, softball, bowled and golfed. He enjoyed reading and studied the histories of the Civil War and WWII. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 1, 2019 from 4-8 pm at the TIDD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME WITH CREMATORY, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard, OH 43026. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10 am Friday, May 3, 20149 at Hilliard United Methodist Church, 5445 Scioto Darby Rd., Hilliard, OH 43026 with inurnment following at Wesley Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hilliard United Methodist Church or American Legion Post 614 Buckeye Boys State Scholarship.
