Wilma Faye Koncar, age 101, nearly 102, died April 10, 2025 at home peacefully of natural causes. Wilma was born May 1, 1923. She was a long-time resident of Hilliard, Ohio. In 2001 she moved to Grove City, Ohio. She started first grade September 1929 at Hilliard Elementary and graduated from Hilliard High School class of 1941. She was active in Girl Scouts in 1939 and belonged to a sewing 4-H Club for 4 years. Wilma was a life-long active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of New Rome, Ohio. She taught 8th grade Sunday School and for many years lovingly gave her time helping other ladies of the church make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Wilma worked as a nurses aide at Starling Loving Hospital on Neil Avenue from 1941 to 1943. At the beginning of World War II, she was compelled to be part of the war effort and served as a Navy Wave in the Hospital Corp, stationed in Pensacola, Florida, November 1943. Following an Honorable Discharge in March, 1946, she moved back to Hilliard and worked at Ohio Bell as an order typist from 1946 to 1949. She met the love of her life, her soulmate, George Koncar, Jr., in 1948 at a YMCA dance in Columbus and they were married at St. Paul Lutheran Church June 25, 1949. In 1951, Wilma was diagnosed with tuberculosis. While hospitalized in the Ben Franklin Hospital, she became a spokesperson for the Christmas Seals fight against tuberculosis for medical research resulting in modern treatment methods.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Nettie (Weber) Hufford; brother, Wayne and sister-in-law Marcine Hufford; loving and devoted husband, George Koncar, Jr.; great grandson, Donavan Lippoli; and very special friend, David Waldo. Wilma is survived by son, George Alan (Jody) Koncar, Zanesville; daughters, Karen (Walt) Tittman, Arizona; Janet (Paul) Weakland, South Carolina; Joyce (Gary) Shaver, Columbus; Grandchildren, Glenda (David) Mihaly, Jessica Lippoli, Angela Ferguson, Robert (Winnie) Fannon, Christina (Josh) Moya, Terrin (Amanda) Daniels, and Baylee Johnson. She is also survived by great grandchildren, Joseph and Anthony Mihaly, Matthew and Maria Lippoli, Graham and Kennedy Ferguson; Mark, Amora, and Nova Moya; Lindsay Fannon; Travis and Lillianna Daniels; and Quinnleigh Johnson, Conner and Liam Murphy. She is survived by nieces, DiAnne (Larry) Hay; Carla (Steve) Lithgo; and Lisa (Mike) Sok; Pamela (Jim) Benze. Nephews, Bruce (Vikki) Halco; Paul (Jill) Halco; David Halco; Cousins and many friends.
Family will receive family and friends at Tidd Family Funeral Home (5265 Norwich Street, Hilliard) on Friday, April 18, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Avenue. Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, April 19 at 11:00 a.m. with viewing one hour before service. Pastors Sara Wadley and Larry Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery (6959 West Board Street, Galloway, Ohio).
Wilma received many flowers from family and friends while she could enjoy them. At her request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund (55 Pasadena Avenue, Columbus, OH 43228) or Faith Mission (217 North Grant Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215).
